Guest interview: "I went to a cat cafe!"

I talk to Ky, 9, who went to London’s first ever cat café, Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, where you can eat and drink in the playful company of 11 rescued cats.

What did you think when your mum told you that you were going to the cat café?

I was really, really, really excited. I wished I was there right now. I was literally counting the days.

How long did you have to wait, because you have to book to go there, don’t you?

Two months.

Does it look like a normal café from the outside?

It definitely does not look like a normal café from the outside. There are lots of things for the cats in the window, like a mini-hammock and a feather poking out – one cat was trying to catch it!

And what’s it like on the inside?
It looks like a café, but there are millions and millions of toys and things for the cats. There were shelves for them and a little window like a picture frame and my favourite thing was a cat playing with toy springs. On the top floor they had wheels for them – like hamsters' wheels, but bigger!

Were the cats friendly?
They were very, very, very friendly. They didn't bite or scratch. They were a bit shy at first but they warmed up to people they didn’t know.

Did they sit on your lap?

They didn’t sit on my lap but one cat came along and sat on my hoodie and went to sleep! That was my favourite one. It had a little fluffy tail and little spots.

Did you find out the names of the cats?

The people who work there tell you if you ask. There are posters on the walls about the cats too, with their names and personalities.

Did the cats seem happy?

They were very happy and really healthy-looking. The café owners are very fussy about them, like you can’t use flash on your camera.

How long did you stay there?

About 1 ½ hours, maybe 2 hours.

Had you had enough by then?

No!

How long would you have liked to stay there?

Umm ... 4 hours!

What did you eat there?

Oh, we had some scones, but I was more interested in the cats.
